Fantastic Unit!
Pros
Nice look, good menu system, right price.
Cons
Dependency on in-line remote
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
In the end it's a great unit and I highly recommend it. Looks nice, features are great, doesn't skip, and the batteries last forever. What else do you need?
Before I purchased this unit I was using the high end SonicBlue CD/MP3 player to make my way around the city. It skipped, the screen cracked in the first three weeks, and it ate batteries like aunt Karen attacking a bag of Milano cookies. If this was the old benchmark then boy has the bar been raised!
Enter the SlimX 400 series: I've owned mine for a month and have had great success with it! The experience starts when I opened the box to see all the goodies packed inside. The car charger, extra battery case, car power adapter, back lit LCD remote, and ear phones are all solid pieces. Though it was originally slated to ship with a pair of ear buds as well, that didn't happen. In place of two cheesy sets you got one nice sounding pair of wrap arounds. For pre-packaged they aren't bad but I still recommend upgrading later.
The look: She's purty! Slim as they claim and shiny to boot. One thing they do well at I-River is make a unit you'll be proud to break out in public. The unique design is sleek and attractive.
But How Does She Handle?: I pound the streets of NYC daily and log at least 20 hours a week on my unit. Skips are almost non-existent and after dropping her a few times I don't even see a scratch. The sound is crisp, clear, and loud. And you can play with the levels on the built in eq if that strikes your fancy. To be honest, you aren't going to see a real difference on a portable unit but still a nice feature.
The batteries last for ages and the new firm ware upgrade even gets another hour out of them. I plug it in once a week and keep it in my bag through the week. It's brilliant.
Cost: The SlimX 400 set me back two hundred but for the extras I think it's worth it. I also got mine the first week it was out so prices have fallen a little. This really is the best unit on the market. I've looked at the SonicBlue, the Phillip, the Sony.... and this is where I put my money.
So What's The Con?: The remote holds the key to manipulating most of the function on the player. You can still play through CD's without it but I wouldn't want to. If you break it you're gonna have to get another and that ain't fun. Still, it isn't a big enough problem for me to take a half star away.
