The Bottom Line:
Test picture on the unit you will buy. Good value if you can get a good unit.
This DVD player seemed to have everything I was looking for: adequate sound without headphones, SD card capability, 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios, and a larger screen for a decent price. I paid $119 at ABC Warehouse, although it was about $10 less if purchased at the web site.
I found it easy to use and it lived up to my expectations for all the above. However, despite turning up the brightness, contrast, and saturation to the max, the picture was too dark to see any detail in darker scenes (e.g. indoor scenes in Jane Eyre). In lighter scenes, there was little definition between dark hair against a dark background.
I felt the picture quality was a bit grainy, and the color ranges seemed to be similar in all scenes. For example, the red scarf in Jane Eyre had a similar color tone to the metal on the bridge in the opening scenes of Gray's Anatomy. It seemed there were only 2 shades of green (olive and grass green).
While I was returning it, another customer exchanged hers. She had no problem with color or brightness on hers, but the battery pack had died after after a few uses. She was really happy with this item and didn't mind the inconvenience of the battery pack.
