GR-D395 the Noisy cam!

The Bottom Line:
I'd recommend the camera if sound quality is not an issue, and you're not trying to be stealthy.
Just purchased this camcorder 3/22/06 and finally fired it up last night. The cam is great in size and weight, very form fitting for the hands, but takes a while to get used to. Both record mode and play mode have their own sets of menu options which makes it confusing (at least it did for me).
ZOOM/FOCUS: Zoom and focus issues were a concern on my previous cam, and this cam does a great job in appropriate focusing at certain levels, even in low light and high speed motioning. There is a little blurring that a occurs when there are a lot of dark colors in an already lowlight situation, but cam seems to adjust after a few seconds.
SOUND: This is the overall disappointment. The features are all great in their own way. You have options to take it from 12bit or 16bit, and can choose how the dubbing audio sounds as well, and from which channels.
The disappointment in the sound is that the quality is great, IF you can get passed the buzzing sound which is actually the tape spinning and recording in the cam. The camera is naturally loud, and is produced as soon as there is a tape in the deck, whether recording or not. The sound is produced so close to the microphone of the cam, that it is actually recorded, it's that loud! This camera is louder than my DVD burner in my computer at full speed. Compared to my previous camera (Samsung SC-L810 Hi8) it is louder and picks up more in the microphone, but I do not like having the buzz sound having been recorded with my video.
Audio lacks the ability to adjust recording volume/gain, and during playback, there is also NO way to adjust the playback volume until recording leaves the device.
OVERALL: Recordings are great, sound QUALITY is OK, but I was disappointed in the loudness of the camera overall. If the camera was not so loud, all of the problems I've experienced would have been non-existent! I guess this is what you get for going so small.
