Cons spring-loaded connector fails often, the included AC vent mount is lame, sluggish

Want two reasons to thank the US government? They gave us the internet and GPS.

One of the biggest names in GPS is Magellan (Thales Navigation, Inc. - pronounced 'tahlis'). "Turn it on and go!" is their trademarked slogan. It truly is that simple. The RoadMate lineup includes the 500 and... Read full review »

How can it help me, when I'm in N.J. and it thinks I'm in California?

Pros When the unit finally works, it is accurate and very clear with directions!
Cons Will not consistently set correctly, takes a while to acquire satellite signals!
Recommended it? Yes

Well, I have written my review of the Tom Tom GPS unit, which I felt was easy to operate and offered a very clear screen! Now, I move on to the Magellan 700 to compare it to the Tom Tom, and what a shock! I had nothing but trouble with the 700!

We all know that the GPS units, or Global... Read full review »

How did I get along without this?

byprokell Jun 20, 2004
20 Helpfuls 21 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Sharp screen, accurate directions, pleasant voice, heavy duty windshield mount
Cons No A/C or computer adaptor included, less points of interest than Garmin product
Recommended it? Yes

I had a chance to compare a Magellan Roadmate 700 firmware 3.20 and a Garmin Streetpilot 2620. I chose the Roadmate 700. They both have built-in hard drives that contain all of the street level mapping data, touch screens, points of interest built in, and voice instructions so you can keep your... Read full review »

$10 Road Atlas or $1200 gadget? UPDATE!

byhomefndr May 7, 2004
20 Helpfuls 21 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Easy to use, good ergonomics, useful gadget/toy. Cutting edge.
Cons Poor instruction/troubleshooting manual. Lots of undocumented features.
Recommended it? Yes

Logical questions to ask before dropping a bit over a grand for an electronic gizmo to essentially replace a $10 map are: "Will this thing do what I expect it to do?" and "Is the technology involved reliable, and worth the additional money compared to a simple paper map?"

Obviously,... Read full review »

Pros It works!
Cons Its expensive!

Recently I bought a Magellan Roadmate 700. To test it, I took a road trip with my family from San Diego to Canada and back. Having never been on such a long road trip, I wanted to see how it performed in places we've never been before and had no idea how to get around. The goal was to never have to... Read full review »

Cons Windshield mount could be rethought out a little better.

Magellan finds its way into my car.

My first GPS was a street pilot color. The very first GPS with a color screen. I paid $1000 for the unit PLUS $100 or so for the CD software PLUS another $125 or so for the 16 meg (that's MEG) of flash memory. As a GPS, it one thing really well…told... Read full review »

One of the best Car Navigation Systems but has some flaws.

bynightfall Mar 16, 2004

Pros Flawless navigation instructions.
Cons Not polished enough for its price point.
Recommended it? No

I've always been a fan of car navigation systems associating them with such futuristic inventions like flying cars, underwater cities and an understandable tax code.

I acquired the Magellan Roadmate 700 from a local retailer (Circuit City) for a planned road trip to New York from... Read full review »

Pros Nice voice, fairly intuitive operation
Cons Unreliable, failure prone, substandard support

Chose this unit after checking the reviews - it was highly rated so I went ahead and bought it. Initial setup went easily enough and the unit worked well. First sign of problems came when I received a letter informing me that an upgrade was available.

Buying the upgrade was a frustrating... Read full review »

Fearless driving at last!

Pros Reasonable price, user-friendly, good tech support, accurate directions, built-in...
Cons Needs more point-of-interest categories.

I bought mine for 4 reasons: (1) road signage in Wisconsin is awful; (2) I get very anxious when I get lost; (3) the price has dropped down to around $300; and (4) most of the reviews have been very positive.

When I got the unit, I plugged it in and was disappointed to find it wouldn't... Read full review »

There are few products that simply do what they claim to do, and it's even rarer to find something as sophisticated, yet easy to use as the Roadmate 700.

I've owned this product for exactly a month now, and I am a total convert! I should start by saying that I've NEVER had any trouble... Read full review »
