A tiny, clever, bright and sharp optical instrument!

Pros Exremely small, rugged with a sharp image
Cons focusing can be a bit tricky until learned
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Extremely useful for closer viewing of anything indoor or outdoors using a very small, rugged, pocketable, unobtrusive optical instrument.
How many times have you wished that you had something in your pocket that would allow you to view something either closer or in greater detail but would be small enough that you could take it anywhere and use it easily and not attract a lot of attention. Well, that's exactly what the Minox Monocular can do for you!

It is very small, about the size of a large, rectangular lipstick tube. The actual physical dimensions are 1.26 in. wide x 3.19 in. long x .79 in. high. It weighs a mere 3.7 ounces. It comes in a compact vinyl suede pouch and doesn't even make a bulge in your pants pocket or purse. The unit has a neck cord so you can put the pouch back in your pocket while using the monocular without fear of losing it or dropping it.

It has a unique focusing mechanism that can be done simply and easily with one hand - the same hand that holds the unit for viewing. What that means is it is totally one-handed in use making it very convenient. Instead of a cylindrical focusing wheel turned by thumb or fingers, it has a sliding button that accomplishes the same thing. The button is raised and shaped with ridges to make it easy to move the button for fine focusing. It is very sensitive to small movements, however, so focusing can be difficult at first until you become familiar with it.

Another nice thing about the focusing mechanism is there is no external movement. All lens travel is internal. This means there is no adjustment for eye relief needed during use.

The best part is the optics. For a 6 X 16 instrument, it does a tremendous job. The image is very bright - brighter than most other 6 x 16 or 6 x 32 glasses. I am really impressed by the optical quality. The image is bright, sharp and no fall-off of image quality around the edges of the view.

The field of view is large at 140 meters. It can focus down to less than 5 feet (1.5 M). This was stated on the Minox web site.

Unfortunately, there is no specification sheet or other explantory information in the original package. It doesn't mention anything about lense coatings but it doesn't seem to suffer from flaring when looking at bright objects so internal reflections are not a problem. It is not weather resistant.

Because it is so small, so bright and so sharp, it is a delight to take on vacation for viewing outdoor sights as well going to the theater or sporting events. It is so small that it can go, virtually, anywhere. It would be a backpackers' delight!

It has an all-metal case and seems to be very rugged so I wouldn't worry about its reliability and use under rough condtions.

It is a high quality instrument and lives up to the Minox brand name.

The cost is high at $89 but I believe you get what you pay for in this instrument. I have 3 other monoculars ranging in price from $20 to $50 and this is, by far, the best of them. The light gathering quality, alone, makes it more useful - indoors or in fading light situations.
