The Bottom Line:
I recommend buying this if your price range is $100-$150, you want to share with multiple computers, and you need the ADF.
I purchased the HP OfficeJet 6310 All-In-One as a replacement for my broken flatbed scanner and an upgrade to the inkjet printer that I'd used for 8 years. I mention those pieces of equipment because your mileage may vary depending on what you are accustomed to using.
I was looking for an All-In-One that had an Auto Document Feeder (ADF), color printing, easy copying, and networking. My price range was $150-200. My home computing environment is a mix of Windows XP and Windows Vista.
I checked HP's website for a product that met my requirements, and I went to find the machine that i had decided on at a local office supply store. They didn't have the All-In-One that I had chosen online, so I looked at the available product lineup. After seeing the various other brands, I decided that the HP 6310 had the most features for a lower cost. It was on sale, so I got the 2-year service agreement for a total of around $150.
Setup on the XP computer was very easy. I inserted the disc and let it install everything. There were a few updates that automatically downloaded, and then I was up and running. I tried to use the same process with the Vista computer, but I had to enter the IP address of the All-In-One for Vista to even "see" it as a printer. I can scan using the device's web page, but this is not an optimal solution. I haven't put any time into seeing why the device isn't detected properly; it could have somethign to do with the firewall settings on the Vista computer. An automatic utility that checks for these problems doesn't seem to be available, so if you're planning on using the network connection, be ready for a lot of configuration issues.
I've had the HP 6310 for about a month, and I've scanned a few hundred pages already. There is now a black line on the left side of every page when scanning with the ADF, but this line does not appear when using the flatbed portion. I should also note that I use third-party software to have manual duplex scanning capability. HP's included software does not allow for this. The print speed is very fast, and the quality is much higher than my previous printer. Just like my last printer, duplex printing is a manual affair. I haven't had to purchase ink cartridges (only 21 pages printed so far), so I'll have to submit an update on the cartridge lifespan and costs.
Please note that I do not use the fax function and media card readers at all, so I'm leaving them out of my comments.
