The Bottom Line:
Nice multifunction printer for the home
I've had this printer for a couple weeks and offer these observations. We have a household of college students needing printers to take to school so over the past year I've had experience with several $100 Epson, Cannon, and HP printers. I was impressed by the HP control panel on this unit. It is easy to follow, and nicely laid out. I didn't have to provide the family with any instruction, the controls are so intuitive. I like the idea of direct buttons instead of searching through menus.
From box to printing/scanning/faxing from my Macbook within 20 minutes, unpack, plug in the power, turn it on, and install the ink cartridges, done. Unlike other printers, the drivers for this HP model don't seem to be included in OSX, so I needed an extra 5 minutes to install them and the HP software from the provided CD. It took about 5 minutes to install drivers on the Macs. The first Windows XP laptop took 95 minutes, the second almost 30. Problems with setup may be based more on the OS version than the printer.
The printer is a bit noisier than most, uses ink at an alarming rate, even with the density turned down in its control panel. It's not all that fast when compared to my other printers. Duplex printing is very slow compared to the Epson. It is compact, even with the document feeder it is much smaller than the equivalent Epson and Canon units. I was surprised by the light weight.
Print quality is on the par with the other printers. I did not try photo printing. It uses a single 3 color ink cartridge, so I wouldn't expect great photo prints. Having to change an entire cartridge just because one color ran out is a disadvantage for me.
IMHO, a great household printer, but probably too noisy, slow, and uses too much ink for the office. Makes a good office fax machine and scanner, however.
