HP Delivers a decent Printer but little support

Pros Clear Photos, Easy controls, Quick Printer and Copying.
Cons Support not able to assist with major issues
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Good product if you can get the software to install, Tech support needs to be educated
I finally had enough of my bottom of the barrel ink jet printer. I decided the quality was in line with its price and if I wanted decent photos then I needed to at least go for the hundred dollar and above types. I saw the HP 4180 "Photos Smart" "All in one" and thought hmmmm scanning and copies as well?? It sure looked good, paper loading a snap and the $129.00 price was within my budget…(My common sense kept screaming nooooooo not an all in one! And I ignored it) It even included cartridges too??? Yes a dream come true……which quickly turned into a nightmare. But before I get into the horror stories lets look at what the specs are according to HP……..

The following specs are as described by HP:

The easy to use front console holds the Copy, Print, Scan and Photo Print buttons. A small but clear display pops up and shows you mode, error messages as well as any Pictures you are working with. A front smart card reader slot(s) accepts all standard smart cards for easy access. The print roller can be removed from a rear panel to clear paper jams. The cartridge bay is easy to load and unload. The paper feed is in front and is very easy to use and work with.Install??? Sure Go Ahead and Try

The unit ships with 2 CD's, one for Windows and one for Mac. It included Drivers, OCR Software and some photo editing apps along with updater and (LOL) Problem solving apps however I don't have any opinion on these why?? BECAUSE THEY WON'T INSTALL! Now please understand I don't like to bash or simply harp on shortcomings but this was serious! After an install failure the install program uninstalls itself however if it gets forgetful you have the ability (Via tech support walk through) to increase your uninstall level from one to four. This I learned from my first call to support. Again I started the install with high hopes which were quickly dashed when a Windows delivered the good ol (Insert program name) has encountered a problem and must close, any data may be lost yadda yadda. Well I guess it was time to play the Tech support game. I got disconnected in record time. Well now that my blood pressure would give my doctor nightmares

I decided to experiment on my VISTA Windows Beta 2 (Next version of Windows currently in beta stage) Well I'll be darned if Vista not only found the printer but used XP's drivers and printed. Well I DO have a way to print. As for Tech Support they were no assistance except to tell me to call Microsoft. I finally was able to force the drivers in however not the software. So allow me to give my two cents worth about quality:

The End Result
The real test is how the unit does its job and I am impressed with the quality of the products printing and copying ability. My photos come out clear and vibrant. It copies with no problem. Scanning is acceptable however I am unable to use OCR as it was part of the bundle that refuses to install. I suppose I can use 3rd party software for my needs however according to HP the bundle has applications to enhance the console however until my frustrations mellow on support I will have to wonder just how good they are.
