The Bottom Line:
Best for beginners or non tech savvy, have a home network in no time
When my son started on the net, playing games on nick junior, it was ok, he used my computer. Then he got older, and wanted to download. Games, songs, movies, he wanted it all. So he eventually did it. He left me frozen in time, unable to access the net. Popups, porn, spyware alerts, you name it, i had it. All the leading packages could not get rid of the mess. So, i went and got a used pentium for him, loaded it up with all the anti virus and anti spyware i could find, and off he went. I studied the thousands of possibilities, read the reviews, and I settled on Linksys Wireless G. I was going to go with the newer wireless N, but the range is less than 50 feet, and on the same floor. I used Cisco stuff for years, They now make Linksys, and i liked all their products. I have a DSL modem that is on DHCP, so i simply plugged in the WRT54G and off it went. Install was a breeze, i did not even use the supplied cd. I must stress that if you have any router in your setup, SECURE IT!!! People do not do the easiest but most important things!!Why let neighbors use your high priced high speed, or let a laptop lurker gain access to your files and data? Generate a WEP key with a passphrase. WEP is not as reliable anymore, it is easily bypassed with some easy to get tools, WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) is the next evolution of wireless security. Search for it and other protection. You can also block out or allow specific mac addresses. Each modem has a unique mac address. I have heard of the newer Linksys routers dying out, having problems with the radio installed inside, so save your receipt, their warranty service is top notch. The front panel shows all the connections hooked up, and the high-tech modem is pretty to look at. You can even hard wire e-net cable to the back, although i get very high speeds without having to do this. The WRT54G is also open source. some Linux nuts have re coded the module to act as a router costing ten times the amount it costs. Be careful with any mods, like all electronic stuff, warranty is voided.
