The Bottom Line:
Good buy; one step below mini DVD.
I bought this camcorder when my Samsung refused to record for no reason. It was time for an upgrade anyway, because I wanted the ability to use "pass-through" recording.
The camcorder offered all the wires necessary to dub VCR tapes through the camera and into the computer via USB. If you want to use IEEE 1394 (Firewire), you'll need to buy your own cable.
I was able to run the VCR A/V into the camera base (it sits in a shoe), and run the firewire into the computer. Sonic MyDVD captured the video as though it was digital, even though it was actually composite video being processed by the camera before it got to the computer. Note: I had to take out the miniDV tape to get this to work, because everytime I pressed "play" on the Sonic capture software, it started to record the miniDV versus the VCR signal. I think there is a menu you have to adjust as well (AV-DV out). A 2 hr video was about 7 gig, and had very nice clarity for an old VHS tape in DVD format on a big screen.
The shoe that the camera sits in affords the smaller camera size because it no longer has to accommodate all the hook-ups - all that is done on the base.
No complaints. I've had good luck with Sony camcorders in the past, and expect the same this time.
