Sony Handycam? DCR-HC32 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

Pros Large zoom and I love the overlap fading option
Cons Videos are dull and focus is already going after one year.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  If you don't expect much quality from a video camera then this is the one for you.
Before buying this camera I had a analog one but i really wanted to switch to digital. I did quite a bit of on-line research before buying this camera. I really wanted to capture more of my children's lives on camera to keep forever. They are only little for a short time and I didn't wanted to capture everything I could.

I was really excited when I read about this camera. With a 20x optical zoom and 800x digital zoom I thought it would be wonderful. I was happy that it had multiple Program Auto Exposure Modes; Portrait, Beach and Ski, Sports Lesson, Spotlight, and Sunset and Moon. It also has a few Picture Effects; Negative Art, Sepia, Monotone, and Solarize. The fadeing effects available are Black, Mosaic, White, Monotone, Stripe and my personal favorite overlap. If you choose to you can insert a title on your video. The camera comes with a few preset titles or you can add your own.

The touch screen LCD panel was a little small for my liking but it was okay. It is 2.5". What I was most excited about though was the supposed "Super SteadyShot Picture Stabilization System". It was supposed to have sensors to compensate for camera shake without compromising your video. I personally didn't think that worked very well.

The research I had done led me too believe that the color and quality of the videos this camera produced would be excellent. I was highly disappointed with it in that are. I find the video quality to just be okay while the colors are somewhat dull. I've only had my camera for just over a year now and the auto focus is not really working anymore. Now thankfully I bought the extended warranty so I will be bringing it in but if I hadn't the manufacturers warranty would be already over.

So what did I think of the sony handycam dcr-hc32? All in all I would not recommend this camera to someone who plans to use it often and is looking for a quality camera. If you are just going to bring it out on rare occasions and don't really expect much from it then go ahead and buy it because you probably won't notice any problems. Personally I wish I had never bought this camera and I will probably buy a canon or panasonic next time.
