The Bottom Line:
If you know your computers really well, this might be great. Otherwise, I'm having trouble viewing my movies on the computer.
This will be the first of our baby product reviews even though it's not really a baby product.
We received this camcorder as a gift for our new baby. In terms of the camera itself, it works great. It is extremely easy to use and the pictures and videos are superb. There is a great optical zoom (so easy you can zoom on a fly on a dog's nose from about 15 feet away) and the details are amazing. It is also extremely easy to connect this to my television. It took about 20 minutes to set it up. All in all, it is pretty idiot proof. . .
. . . Until you fill up the hard drive and need to transfer the files to your computer. That actually was not too hard either, it was trying to play the files on the computer that became the trouble. You have to install the program on every computer you want to view on, then all you can do is view the file. You can't edit the file, or even link them together into one big file. And if you have a great movie of your baby and you want the whole world to see? That's not going to happen. At least that is not going to happen to our baby. We can't figure out how to make it so that someone without the software can view the movies. So, unfortunately, all our movies reside in an external hard drive that takes forever to access. I'm still not sure what to do about this.
So, just remember, if you plan to have less than 60 gB of movies, you are entirely in the clear. If you plan on downloading this stuff and editing on your computer, you might need to take some classes.
Still, I recommend it. I might just have to wait for the baby to grow up to show me how to use it.
