The Bottom Line:
is this camcorder is like riding a roller coaster and emphatically NO unless you like pain then its great.
Lets cut to the chase here. I tried this camcorder( that uses dvd and memory sticks to record to) out and read the reviews. I even tried another out cause I kind of liked the video. Final recommendation, is this is one of Sony's most buggiest camcorders. For some reason Sony's DVD line always has bugs or maybe thats the way it is for all dvd camcorders. I don't think I ever tried one that stopped recording or playing back for the smallest reasons and every reason possible and this camcorder more then any other I ever tried. I honestly believe anyone who buys this is going to be a gluten for punishment . Sometimes it didn't turn on , often would not go to next step or menu, often stopping etc, and never saw a camcorder so bad. First off the definition quality was good It blows away any camcorder I ever used non hd except maybe the newer ones. The cx 100 was almost as good and way better inside and without any quirks at all Save yourself the aggravation with sonys dvd hd version here. After two tries its for people who like pain. One walks away amazed at times at how real the high def looked but its only in very good light. Its so unbelievable that even though there are way more bad things then good, the surprising fact that the quality of the video in good light is way better then almost all of last decade non hd consumer models almost still persuades you to keep this bundle of contradictions, almost . The almost lasts as long as it takes for this to stop working for instance cause there is a smudge on the camcorder dvd reader But there are other reasons it may stop too.. Now onto the problems using this format and camcorder and whether its really worth keeping and the answer is no but its too bad cause the video is good. Even though you can use Sony memory sticks to record to also, its still choppy and bad in low to medium light and worse then most every camcorder come to think about it. I mean really bad like a flip indoors.
Another problem though is DVD media used in this camcorder is full of errors when used and slow to finalize and In low to medium light shooting is way worse then most camcorders I tried. Sorry I had to repeat the full of errors bit. Low light shooting is so bad you end up thinking this camcorder is full of contradictions. The error messages and slowness in use almost wipe out the great video in good light. YOu want to talk about from bad to great , try this baby out. Its hard to rate this though or even want to keep it when its so hard to use this medium. Most of all what was Sony thinking giving consumers such great videos in good light only to be utterly disappointed once that light goes away. The light issue is not like the light issues Sony has even in their cheap non hd models: because its worse here. The total minutes of video per disc is very low too. The time you feel utterly wasted here trying desperately to shoot a movie only to get countless error messages because for example one finger print stops the disc from spinning normally and stalls to error message will wreck many if not all recording sessions. Sony had to know they were giving consumers both the best and worse of both worlds when they made this camcorder . Dvd has to get much more faster and reliable for Sony and I like Sony camcorders generally speaking the most without any doubt , but this was the buggiest one or two I ever tried
