My car (Infiniti I35 2002) wasn't...

My car (Infiniti I35 2002) wasn't listed on the site. Two emails to support told me that I needed two antenna convertor cables to connect the FM modulator to my factory radio, even though this was not listed on the site itself (in fact, the site said that the two cables were "not recommended" for my car).
So I receive the FM modulator and the two cables, and the enclosed installation instructions are generic and give NO information whatsoever about how to remove the radio from my car, or how to connect the FM modulator to the cables, or how the cables connect to the antenna jack.
I suppose I could get on the phone and be guided through it, but Crutchfield needs to include some better instructions - at least tell me how to remove the radio on an Infiniti, or tell me how to TELL if the radio needs those metal release tools or not. I'll probably wind up damaging my dash trying to pry off the panels since the much-touted "information for your car" sheet doesn't exist.
At least include general instructions for connecting an FM modulator to a factory radio!

I received the wrong install kit for my car radio. Before ordering the antenna I called for advice. The person who answered (I can provide the name if you wish) told me I needed a mast to mount the antenna. I said that the information on the WEB site said that mounting hardware was included. He said no it wasn't. I did not believe him and ordered the antenna on-line (instead of completing the order on the phone). I was right, he was wrong. I installed my antenna with no problem and no separate mast. Would I make another purchase from Crutchfield again? Have not decided. Best Buy can provide the kind of service I received.

Overall, I think Crutchfield is a good merchant as this is my second experience with them. This last experience is frustrating because I was not informed that I would need to be home to sign for the shipment. I would have given a business address instead because I am rarely home. They are currently shipping another order by next day UPS after the previous FedEx shipment could not be picked up or re-routed. I am expecting the shipment tomorrow and feel that Crutchfield has handled this well. I wish they would inform customers about the signature requirement at the time of checkout.

I bought an Alpine headunit to install into my old Volvo wagon. The headunit was fine, and the shipping was very fast (probably because I live in the same state as Crutchfield).
My beef? They had no "Mastersheet" instructions for my car! They talk these up big-time on the site, but all I had to go on were these useless Scosche instructions. I called tech support, but they were sort of haughty and gave me bad info. I asked my master Volvo mechanic (ASE, 30 years' Volvo experience, owns his own shop) to do it, and he agreed. A few days later he said he couldn't find a way to do the install and have it look as good as he'd like. I ended up paying Best Buy $100 to do the install. It sounds fine, but I would've saved about $40 if I'd just bought the unit from them in the first place. Bottom line: Crutchfield is OK if you have a super-common car--late-model domestic or Asian import--and you're handy with DIY stuff--esp. electrical in nature. |

The website is well organized and easy to understand. The product selection is good.
All of this is fine,except....their prices are mediocre at best. Fine you get a dash kit and wire harness free. But you spend a bunch more for the product in the first place, so no real savings. I found my stereo for $150 less at a different online store (yes auth dealer, no not refurbished). If I wanted to, I could have had somebody install it for me, and paid for the harness/dash kit and still saved ~$75. |
