Bose TriPorts: Unbeatable in small doses
Pros: Superior sound quality too good for words.
Cons: Headphones become too uncomfortable to wear for any real length of time. Full review Because I have small children, I have to watch movies after they've gone to sleep. I also have to wear headphones so I don't wake them up. Being a snob for letterbox formatted movies, one can imagine my desire for superior sound to go with it. I was astonished at the quality of the Bose TriPorts. I tested the headphones by watching particular scenes from movies I'd seen several times before. To be honest, I never knew such levels of clarity were possible in headphones. Deciding I'd made a sound investment (no pun intended), I now looked forward to re-watching all my favorite movies to see what new sounds I might discover. The journey was short-lived. Approaching the 60-minute mark, my ears became distractingly uncomfortable. That is, my ears felt too warm and began stinging (like ones leg when it's fallen asleep). My ears also felt as though they were under some kind of pressure. So I took the headphones off for a few minutes and went for round two. I couldn't even make it twenty more minutes. I tried this a couple more times before I gave up. It should be noted that the unpleasant pressurized feeling continued for quite a while after I was finished with them. That was last night and even the memory of it as I type this makes my ears feel uncomfortable. When I finish this review I am going to return them. I had considered getting the TriPort in-ear models but - having read some reviews on it - I believe the criticisms of them: chiefly, that they fall out too easily. For a few songs, or a single TV episode, I'd say they are unbeatable. Past that, the TriPorts become the definition of frustration. |
