Pros:  Value, Performance, Included 18-55mm lens is great, image quality, quality of camera

Cons:  No hard buttons (without customizing) for ISO or White Balance

The Bottom Line:  A great camera for any enthusiast looking for either their 1st DSLR or just upgrading. The image quality and flexibility of the camera won't hold you back.

I purchased a D40 a few months ago and now feel that I am ready to review this product.
I could not be happier. I purchased the camera with the included 18-55mm lens along with a 55-200 VR Nikon Lens. The quality of the included lens and the extra lens is top notch. I will focus on the 18-55 mm lens since that is what is included. There is no fringing on the 18 mm side and has very little barrel distortion of the image. The lens has a small switch on the side, which happens to be very easy to reach, which controls whether the lens is on auto or manual focus. I found the auto focus capabilities of the lens to be very good, it will focus for you very quickly. The manual focus is damped and very smooth because of it. No twitchy focus ring here.
The camera itself has been very well thought out, with all the commands needed with in very easy reach on the back and top of the body. The command dial on the top right of the back of the body makes moving through information a breeze in the in camera menus, which are them selves very intuitive and slick. The camera may only be a 6MP camera but the engine is so strong that more MP would be overkill and would just create very large cumbersome files filing up your SD card.
The camera has many preset auto functions on the mode dial, ranging from portrait to night. This is nice when I let say, my mother, borrow the camera, she can simply set it to auto and shoot away. I prefer the control the aperture priority, shutter priority, and full manual controls give me over the exposures.
The only problem I have with this camera is the lack of actual buttons for ISO or White Balance on the body of the camera, you can customize the buttons on the body however to give yourself these buttons.
All in all this camera with the included lens is a great value that will get any enthusiast shooting great photos.
