I've been a Wharfedale fan since i bought my first pair Diamond 7.1. And they've always been great! My cousin bought his Bose 301 for 15000 pesos (Philippines) then i bought my 7.1 for 4,500 pesos. When he heard the sound of my wharfies he was amazed at the performance! He wished he didn't spend that much for a pair of Bose speakers. But I think the Bose sounded very good too. I stuck to my 7.1 for 2 years. I wanted to upgrade to floorstanding speakers when i got my JVC rx8000vbk but the prices of floorstanding speakers are too steep for my budget, until I saw the reviews on the newly introduced wharfedale diamond 8.1! Wow! Kevlar! Maple! 5 star reviews! 5ooo PHPesos! Then there were the 8.3! Outstanding! I waited a little more. Well not waited but really saved some more dough to buy the 8.3(6,800 PHP). Then the 8.4 came along! For 8,300 Philippine pesos!(150 US$). Now that's really something! The reason i think it's cheaper here in the Philippines is because the parts are all assembled in china and very many chinese entrepreneurs invest here. Cheaper shipping costs maybe.
Now the sound. What can i say? I'm a classic rock fan and reggae music fan all my life and can't wait to try Sublime's Santeria.
It just blew me off the couch! Considering I'm only using generic dvd/mp3 players, no sony nor philips brands, just plain made in china electronics. My speaker wires were flimsy and my connectors are cheap. If I upgrade to better speaker wires and connectors i believe I could never ask for more! The bass was just astounding, it was very powerful and tight but never boomy, very warm; and it did not drown the mids and the guitar riffs! I can just feel the bass pounding me in the chest, what a feeling!
the trebles were very good. Some tweeters tend to hurt your ears when in high volume but the 8.4s high was just nicely balanced with the lows although sometimes it depends on the recording of the music you're listening to, like The Door's Light My Fire, where the treble was a little too harsh when played in high volume, but the bass was still there to satisfy. My friend who went to see my new Diamond 8.4 came and was amazed that a pair of 6.5" woofers could deliver window-rattling bass! He's the one who loves hiphop music. Hearing the 8.4 on FM radio
I'm not much of the movie guy after watching Daredevil it made me to think that I need to buy a powered sub for support.
The 8.4 looked very, very nice too. I'll never be ashamed of how it compares with the finish of the polk audios and energy floorstandings. The yellow kevlar that seem to say "look at my muscles bro!give me what u got and i'll give u what u want." the plinths add a little bit of more class too although it does help in lessening the floor vibrations.
I'm not writing this review for the diamond 8.4 because I've compared it with every high end speaker out there, but because I heard how the 8.4 sounds, i'm never a hifi audio expert i just know that an equipment delivers great-sounding audio the way I want to hear it. That's the important thing anyway.
For the price and for the quality of it, Wharfedale Diamond 8.4, ALL THUMBS UP! THANKS A LOT WHARFEDALE!
