Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8 Must Be the Greatest Wide-Angle Lens!

bypaulphoto Feb 6, 2003
59 Helpfuls 60 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Superb optics, solid built, super-fast AF and super-quiet operation
Cons Expensive price tag may be the one and only objection in this lens
Recommended it? Yes

My first zoom lens in the extreme wide angle was the Nikon 20-35mm f/2.8D. For me, it was a dream lens. When I bought the 20-35mm lens, the 17-35mm zoom had already been introduced. At the time, I thought a difference of 3mm in focal length was not much. As the old saying goes, "Be content with the... Read full review »

Pros very well built and useful lens with fast aperture and great viewing angle
Cons heavy and not cheap, but we cant have everything
Recommended it? Yes

This lens continues to surprise me with its performance. Outdoors, it seems you can capture limitless wide angle shots with amazing depth of field, and then look down and get a picture of a flower from nearly 6" away from the end of the lens. Each picture will turn out sharp and tightly focused... Read full review »

CANON EF-S 17-85mm IS USM: Digital SLRs Only!

bytheuerkorn Jan 6, 2005

Pros IS, non-rotating filter mount, quiet operation, fast internal focus,...
Cons Maximum aperture only f4, somewhat expensive, no full-frame compatible, sharpness below...
Recommended it? Yes

Most affordable digital SLR cameras like the Digital Rebel or EOS 20D sport a smaller image sensor (compared to 35mm film) and that translates into an 'unused' area that's covered by 35mm lenses. By optimizing the lens toward the smaller area, the lens itself can be made more compact. The only... Read full review »

A Good Walkaround Lens!

I bought the 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS USM lens bundled with a new Canon EOS 30d from B&H roughly 3 months ago. In these first few months, I've learned a number of things about this lens. Traditionally, I come from a background of 35mm film cameras and hard-metal lens, hence when I unwrapped this lens, I... Read full review »
