Canon EF 50mm 1.4 USM Lens- I'm so glad I broke my 1.8

byxxskagirlxx Jan 4, 2007
24 Helpfuls 25 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Buttery soft bokeh, fast performance in low light conditions, ultra sonic motor
Cons Spendier than the 1.8, a little slow to focus in low light
Recommended it? Yes

One year ago my husband surprised me with a Canon digital Rebel XT, which completely changed the way I took photos. This past fall I upgraded to a Canon 30d, and took to heart the theory that an excellent photo has less to do with the actual camera and more to do with the lens. I knew it was time... Canon 50mm f1.4 USM - Almost as good as it gets

bymerrydown Feb 14, 2007
16 Helpfuls 17 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Fast, light, great bokeh, reasonable price, lovely color, low chromatic aberration,...
Cons Not as good quality build as L lenses, some don't like the focusing ring.
Recommended it? Yes

The 50mm is a 'prime lens' so it has no zoom functionality. That means that it won't be a choice that every photographer feels comfortable with. For those on a low budget it might seem like a false economy to buy a lens which won't fill gaps in your zoom range. It depends what you need to shoot... Read full review »

Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8 Must Be the Greatest Wide-Angle Lens!

bypaulphoto Feb 6, 2003
59 Helpfuls 60 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Superb optics, solid built, super-fast AF and super-quiet operation
Cons Expensive price tag may be the one and only objection in this lens
Recommended it? Yes

My first zoom lens in the extreme wide angle was the Nikon 20-35mm f/2.8D. For me, it was a dream lens. When I bought the 20-35mm lens, the 17-35mm zoom had already been introduced. At the time, I thought a difference of 3mm in focal length was not much. As the old saying goes, "Be content with the... Read full review »

Pros very well built and useful lens with fast aperture and great viewing angle
Cons heavy and not cheap, but we cant have everything
Recommended it? Yes

This lens continues to surprise me with its performance. Outdoors, it seems you can capture limitless wide angle shots with amazing depth of field, and then look down and get a picture of a flower from nearly 6" away from the end of the lens. Each picture will turn out sharp and tightly focused... Read full review »
