Late nineteenth century Cuba. Dawn. At the docks, Luis (Antonio Banderas) waits for his American mail-order bride. But, his wait seems to be in vain. Then, magically, she appears--Julia (Angelina Jolie). And, she is beautiful, unlike the woman whose picture she sent. But Luis had lied as well--he wrote that he was only a clerk in the coffee company that he actually owns. In spite of their deceptions, they marry immediately. They are blissfully happy, although Julia has her demons. She has nightmares, she ignores her sister's letters, and--mysteriously--won't open her trunk. Her sister sends an unnerving detective to check that she arrived. Still unsatisfied, her sister arrives herself. That's when Julia disappears with the money in Luis's bank accounts, instantaneously transforming Luis's dream into a nightmare.

Scriptwriter/director Michael Cristofer explores sexual obsession and deception in ORIGINAL SIN. Who better to bring Roald Dahl's adored children's story to life than the mastermind behind inventive films like EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and BEETLEJUICE? From Tim Burton's opening shot--against Danny Elfman's eerie score--this CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY is recognizably darker than the Mel Stuart-directed 1971 version starring Gene Wilder. Though the mysterious chocolate factory has been closed for 15 years, it continues to produce and ship candy all over the world. When a contest promises a tour of the plant to the lucky finders of five golden tickets hidden inside wrappers, no one is more excited than Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore), an impoverished boy whose family lives mere steps from the factory. Though he can barely afford even one candy bar, fate intervenes, and Charlie finds the last golden ticket.

Joined at the gates by a group of despicable brats named Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde, Augustus Gloop, and Mike Teavee, Charlie and his Grandfather (David Kelly) venture inside propr... Professional Reviews
(07/30/2001, p.18, Lisa Nesselson): "...ORIGINAL SIN remains compulsively watchable thanks to leads Antonio Banderas [and Angelina Jolie]....The pic is gorgeous..." (07/28/2005, p.92, Peter Travers): "Tim Burton surrounds Depp with miraculous visuals of spun sugar and creeping menace. Their missionary lunacy is a treat for twisted children of all ages."

Angelina Jolie, NAKED!!

Pros Angelina Jolie gets naked. Convincing story, held my interest
Cons If it were another hour longer, directors could have tied up loose ends
Recommended it? Yes

I went to Original Sin for one shallow reason, I wished to see boobs on the big screen, and not just any boobs, but the breasts of Tomb Raider's own Angelina Jolie.
Call my original sin oogling or something, but not coveting my neighbors wife, as Billy Bob Thornton doesn't live near me.

Tawdry Fun

Pros JOLIE IS NAKED. The movie is pretty good too.
Cons Too racy for some.
Recommended it? Yes

Original Sin is bound to be the underrated bomb of the summer. The film has nothing about it that will make it a blockbuster or a classic. It is however the very definition of a 'guilty pleasure.' It's so racy, dirty, and jaunty, not to mention a great looking film, that I couldn't help but adore... Read full review »

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) - A Johnny Depp Sundae with Tim Burton Sprinkles

Pros Wonderful visuals; Depp, Highmore and Pyle
Cons Unnecessary subplot
Recommended it? Yes

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - you know, the one with Gene Wilder - used to play once a year on TV when I was a kid. Only once, and I relished every delicious moment. Oh, the lickable wallpaper, the chocolate river, the delectable fantasy room where each and every thing was sweet and... Read full review »

Pros Neat-o ending, nice special FX
Cons Huge fans of the 1971 version may be put off.
Recommended it? Yes

Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory (1971) is one of those movies I must have watched over a hundred times as a kid. Even just writing about it, I can hear the music in my head as Charlie goes to open that last candy bar...

The prospect of a remake didn't exactly send me off the deep... Read full review »
