Imaginative theology and a bigger-than-usual budget make Kevin Smith's (CHASING AMY, CLERKS) fourth film a kind of post-Catholic fantasy that only a comic-book enthusiast of his caliber could dream up. It concerns banished angels, Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck) who, after a few millennia in Wisconsin, discover a loophole in Catholic doctrine that would allow them back into heaven--but prove the fallibility of God and destroy the universe. As they make their way to New Jersey to receive a plenary indulgence, God dispatches a seraphim (Alan Rickman) to recruit lapsed-Catholic Bethany (Linda Fiorentino) to stop the angels. She finds help in muses, prophets (Jay and Silent Bob), and the forgotten 13th apostle, Rufus (Chris Rock). Before long, all hell breaks loose (literally), and God (Alanis Morrisette) has to put in an appearance of her own. Smith's controversial (and very funny) film is powered by his trademark dialogue, ripe with observations on pop culture, religion, and bodily functions. Less

Director Ron Howard and star Russell Crowe re-team after their Oscar-winning collaboration, A BEAUTIFUL MIND, for this rousing biopic. It's the true story of boxer James J. Braddock (Russell Crowe), a heavyweight contender from New Jersey nicknamed "the Bulldog of Bergen," who lost his fame and fortune during the Great Depression only to win the hearts of the downtrodden during a spectacular comeback. Crowe is masterful as Braddock, with Renee Zellweger playing his wife, and Paul Giamatti as his loyal friend and manager, Joe Gould. The sharply observed script devotes a significant amount of screen time to the domestic struggles of Braddock's family; developing character and place with a wealth of period detail, so when the comeback starts, the payoff is enormous. The matches themselves are unforgettable: raw, intense, riveting, with more than a passing stylistic nod to Martin Scorsese's groundbreaking 1980 film, RAGING BULL. Though it may sound a bit formulaic, one should remember that this is the true a... Less

Pros Has some funny moments and a great cast.
Cons Moments are about it, the movie drags a bit.
Recommended it? Yes

Your imagination is really needed here. But imagine if you will that God sends down the angel Metatron(Alan Rickman) to convince a divorced, non-practicing Catholic woman, Bethany, (played by Linda Fiorentino)that she must stop two fallen angels, Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck) from... Buddy Christ vs. the Poop Demon

Pros Scathing satire of modern churches makes this the most religious movie in years
Cons Profanity, feces and lackluster acting drag it to the lower depths
Recommended it? Yes

Finally! A movie that dares to reveal that church-suppressed truth: God has a sense of humor. Trouble is, some of the devout folks on this mortal coil might not be laughing after they see Kevin Smith?s Dogma.

My father, a Baptist minister, once felt the same way about Monty Python?s Life... Read full review »

Cinderella Man: An Inspirational and Entertaining Sports Movie

byBryan_Carey Feb 19, 2006

Pros Giamatti, Howard, Crowe, and Zellweger in that order
Cons Some parts seemed very similar to other boxing movies; Basically predictable
Recommended it? Yes

Movies about the sport of boxing are often very action- packed and memorable and they often feature a comeback story where the underdog ends up the champion when the final bell rings. The year 2004 brought us another boxing film and this one follows much of the same path of other films in its genre... Read full review »

Russell Crowe knows no fear in Cinderella Man (2005)

Pros Makes us appreciate what we have. Russell Crowe is astounding.
Cons Iffy play by Zellwegger
Recommended it? Yes

I hate using the words "brilliant performance". If I do, it's usually in the Pros and Cons section. Just as a quick and easy way of saying "Yeah, sure, the actor did a good job." But in the actual review, where all the detail and the truth comes out, I find that to be kind of a strong expression... Read full review »
