My first universal was Samsung's DVD-HD841. Now that did have problems. The picture quality was ok but DVD-Audio discs and SACDs kept cutting out while playing. I didn't really want to shell out so much for a DVD...

Our old DVD players has been on its way out for some time. It would play the first DVD of the day but would then refuse to load another disc for the rest of the day. I finally broke down and bought the Sony DVP-SR500H.

Unreliable exactly like other cheap DVDs. Limited to 480p via component connectors.

I chose the Sony DVP-SR500H ($60) over the Memorex MVD2047 because I believed that Sony brand will provide me with at least 1 year of service vs. the few months that is the "typical standard" nowadays with cheap DVD players. The Sony costs 50% more but it's really only $20 more.
