One cannot help but think of terrorist attacks while watching Stephen Spielberg's update of the classic sci-fi fantasy THE WAR OF THE WORLDS. While the H.G. Wells story dates back to 1898, and has inspired previous adaptations, this particular version feeds off its 21st century audience's fear of a terrorist-induced apocalypse. Even if the sight of tall buildings crumbling to the ground and crowds running fearfully away from their demise doesn't trigger post-9/11 paranoia, dialogue such as "Is it the terrorists?" will.

Disgruntled, divorced father Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) is struggling to connect with his estranged kids, who have been dropped off by their mother for the weekend, when a severe and unusual lightning storm leaves his New Jersey neighborhood powerless. Over the course of the next few hours, it becomes obvious that this was not a storm at all, but rather the first sign of a worldwide alien attack. Emerging from the ground in multi-legged tripod-like machines that have apparently be... Less

Stoppard Must Be Stark Raving Sane to Turn Hamlet into a Minor Character

Pros Laughter.
Cons Death.
Recommended it? Yes

I'll confess that Hamlet has never been one of my favorite plays. It's an overwrought tragedy that makes me giggle every bit as much as Romeo and Juliet. I think it's funny when Hamlet and Laertes get into a grief-contest at Ophelia's grave. I think it's funnier still when Hamlet soliloquizes with... Read full review »

Pros Uproariously bland humor. Great take on Shakespeare. Superb acting all around.
Cons None, except maybe the itch to know which is which.
Recommended it? Yes

I wasn't going to write an opinion on this movie. Mainly because if you're going to like this movie, you've probably already seen it.

Pros Some good special effects, lots of action.
Cons Lack of sensibility, tripods are boring, actors lack depth
Recommended it? Yes

I was hesitant to watch War of the Worlds because I contemplated boycotting it. Why? Like many people I am pretty annoyed with Tom Cruise and his new romance, his stupid Oprah-couch dancing and his obnoxious and fanatical religious views. However, I guess I am shallow and I really wanted to see... Read full review »

Pros Dakota Fanning, entertaining plot, special effects.
Cons Ending could have been better
Recommended it? Yes

Several years ago I saw most of the 1953 version of War of the Worlds and enjoyed it. I'm not sure when I first heard about the new version of the movie, but I was interested in seeing it. My interest grew after I saw the previews.

Ray Ferrier, a dockworker, was divorced. He didn't have a... Read full review »
